Zippos Circus – A Review

Zippos Circus artist photo

Last week we were invited along to Zippos circus to see their new show 'Unchained'. Promising to be a colourful, action packed medley by thrilling new acts from around the world, it's fair to say I was pretty excited!

I haven't been to the the circus in years, I can't actually remember the last time I went and considering I have kids, that's pretty surprising.

Zippos Circus is one of the most recognisable I believe. I was expecting great things and I wasn't disappointed.

When we pulled up to the green on Blackheath, London and saw the big tent and all the entourage we were all ridiculously excited and couldn't wait to get inside!

Light up flashing swords at the ready to wave about, the stage was set, the atmosphere was electric. There was a full house and we couldn't wait to see the show!

The RingMaster was the legendary Norman Barret MBE who was brilliant. The world's greatest, he has returned to take centre stage at Zippos once again and keep a watchful eye over proceedings!

The Ringmaster had his own little spot in the show too with his performing budgies. It was unbelievable what they could do. He had trained them to do tricks

The Ringmaster had his own little spot in the show too with his performing budgies. It was unbelievable what they could do. He had trained them to do tricks, they walked, they jumped, they swung round on a minature trapeze... and  not once did they fly off! So clever and fascinating!

The traditional clowns and their slapstick humour entertained us, my children hadn't really seen comedy like this before. It was nice for them. Then the contortionist who managed to climb and fold herself into a bottle was my daughters favourite, who prides herself on being rather bendy herself due to her gymnastics obsession!!

The traditional clowns and their slapstick humour entertained us, my children hadn't really seen comedy like this before. It was very silly and old school but fantastic. Herculese, the Strong Man was amazing. He is a Guiness world record holder and impressed the audience with his physical powers and youthful charm.

Hercules, the Strong Man was amazing. He is a Guiness world record holder and impressed the audience with his physical powers and youthful charm. Among other things, he pulled this huge jeep with his TEETH, he allowed it to drive over him and he also balanced this huge tree trunk on the back of his neck which he then swung around with not one but FIVE people on it!

My daughter looks on in awe... nail biting stuff!

During the interval we were treated to lunch in the hospitality tent where we could mingle with the performers, which was a real treat!

My Girl got to meet the RingMaster, Hercules and the Rastelli Clowns.

zippos circus horses

The Zippos Circus horses are an incredible act with six horses! Summer, their trainer is immensely talented.

I think the horses were, by far, my favourite act of the whole show! They were truly amazing. Breathtakingly beautiful, they ran around the ring in formation, they danced and circled around each other. They stood magnificent on their two back legs and they could even jump through paper covered hoops! Their size in the circus ring added a real sense of unpredictability and danger!

Closing the show was an acrobat troupe from Cuba. High class and dangerous, it was thrills all the way.

This photo isn't very clear but shows the sheer height at which the acrobats perform.

Their act was high energy and completely entertaining, great music and lots of dancing up there! (as well as the swinging about!). But I guess from South America what else would you expect? The skill and strength involved in what they were doing was totally awesome!

The ensemble at the end!

I have to say, my only grievance was that it didn't go on for longer! I loved everything about it, the atmosphere, the acts, the fact that my children were completely mesmerised... even my Teen who came along with is girlfriend... they were transfixed from start to finish!

If you get the chance, I would thoroughly recommend a visit.

This 2014 'Unchained' tour is currently in Mitcham, Surrey until 6th May before moving to Sidcup from 8th - 13th May. After that it will head over to Windsor from 14th -18 May, Wallington in Surrey 22nd - 26th May then Shrewsbury from 28th May to 1st June.

After these dates, the Circus will head North to Scotland for shows in June but it will continue to tour throughout the UK until October. You can check dates and find out more information here.

I will definitely be back to see another show next year.

I was given complimentary tickets to the circus in exchange for an honest review.
