The C Word

A few weeks ago my then 7 year old daughter came home from school and told me that one of the other children in her class had said the ‘C’ word!

Whaaat?!!!! ย I stared at her in disbelief. How is this possible?!!! She said it so matter of fact. I mean, she obviously knew it was a very naughty word because she didn’t actually SAY the word. Good girl. I was extremely shocked though.

I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I didn’t want my little girl to have heard the most detestable of all swear words, the most vulgar, pointless, scummy word in my opinion. Now I’m not too stuffy and naive to think she could never hear swear words…. I have a teenager after all, plus we parents might let the odd one slip out under our breath maybe when we’re irate… but the C word?! No, never. That’s in another league as far as I’m concerned!

And who on earth in her class would say that? My mind raced trying to picture all the kids… all of them are lovely little children – it’s a nice school in a nice area. These kids are also very young? “That’s a VERY naughty word darling, who said it?”

She gave me a name. Ok, if anyone would say it then yes, I can see it being HIM. But still, even though this little boy can be a handful at school sometimes, his parents are lovely, respectable business types and he is their only child, surely they don’t say it?! That’s not to say children don’t hear things elsewhere as I’ve mentioned. It was difficult, but not impossible for me to imagine.

My daughter was now just playing around as she usually does straight after school, didn’t seem at all fazed by what she had said. I on the other hand was pretty stressed out about it. How dare someone say that in front of my girl who I try to protect from such things. I wonder if it was said in context? Is it a word that can actually be used in context?!! It’s slang obviously used in aggression for someone who is…umm..horrible?!!! Ok I just looked it up and it IS in the dictionary. Ha, but I’ll let you look it up if you so wish.

“Is it a swear word mummy?” she asked me as if reading my mind which was now twisted up from it all!

“Of course it is darling, it’s a disgusting word and you are never to say it ok?”

“But *(not naming him)* says it all the time”?!!!!

Really?! Ah…. ok….suddenly I think the penny is dropping….. “What did he actually say because I’m not so sure?” I wonder…

“Crap?”….. my daughter says quietly like it’s the naughtiest word in the world and as if I’m a complete idiot!!

Oh…hahaha – Phew!! After all that! I did feel like a bit of an idiot actually! But I was so relieved! Still not great and definitely not a word I’d like my daughter to use too often – ย but so glad it wasn’t the word I thought it was. Bless my little girl – doesn’t say much for me though, immediately thinking the worst..my mind must’ve been in the gutter somewhere!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Aww it was just funny and sweet that she thought that word was really bad!! Thanks for dropping by ๐Ÿ™‚ x

  2. His parents must use that word as a fill in for the naughty ones!

  3. hehe, that’s funny! It’s amazing how kids can pick up words from just a one-off hearing though, especially if it’s a naughty word ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Ha, I would have thought the same! So glad to hear it was something a lot is awful ๐Ÿ™‚ #wotsofunee

Hi Sara, it was funny that I just automatically assumed the worst. Apparently I found this out recently that at my boys nursery the ‘S’ word means ‘stupid’!!! They are not allowed to use it! haha xx

  5. I do love that. We had a similar conversation over the F word. The word in question being spelled for me rather than said. F.A.R.T ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Hahaha….that really IS so funee because as I was reading my initial thought was that you were very shocked by the word ‘crap’… ๐Ÿ˜€
