Dolphin Tale 2 – A Review

I love watching films with the kids and I was really looking forward to taking them to see Dolphin Tale 2 which was being previewed to some lucky press and bloggers at the fabulous Ham Yard Hotel in Piccadilly.

dolphin tale 2 review

This will be my fourth visit to the Ham Yard in as any months for various events and it’s an amazing hotel. I attended the Next fashion show there in one of the gorgeous suites, as well as a Nickelodeon Now TV event with the kids which was held in the function room in the basement that boasted a two lane bowling alley!! It’s a very hip and funky place and now I find out, obviously, that it has a cinema too… Oh yes, very excited about this.

Dolphin Tale Toy

The kids were given a cuddly toy Dolphin which they were completely over the moon with, before heading into the screening room.

So, if you haven’t heard about it, what’s the film about?

Well, it’s the sequel to the first movie which saw a bottlenose Dolphin ‘Winter’ being rescued and given a home at the Clearwater Marine Hospital in Florida. Winter had been caught up in a crab trap which damaged her tail, it later needed to be amputated and meant Winter couldn’t be set free again to live in the sea. Her home became the Clearwater Hospital. Along the journey she met 11 year old boy Sawyer who looked after her as a volunteer, together with Dr Clay who ran the Clearwater, and his young daughter Hazel, also 11. The film is based on a true story which was inspired by the struggle and fight the Clearwater faced to remain open and the positivity that Winter created around the world when she had to have a prosthetic tail, made to help her swim better and be accepted by other Dolphins.

In this second film, Sawyer and Hazel are now older teenagers and the main plot is that Winter’s dolphin companion dies and the team at Clearwater Marine can’t find a mate to replace her. As Dolphins need to live with others, Winter will be taken off them and sent elsewhere if a new Dolphin doesn’t join them soon. In amongst this there is the delightful, blossoming relationship between Sawyer and Hazel.

It really is a truly heart warming film. It’s one the whole family can enjoy together and it’s so refreshing to watch a film that isn’t over the top action packed, has violence or has the stupidity factor like other films for kids. There is something for everyone in this film. It’s nice and easy but it does have a few nail biting scenes and laugh out loud moments, and it gives you that ‘oh my goodness, what happens next’ element too.

My children loved the Dolphins, who were without a doubt the stars of the show! Winter (who plays herself!) takes centre stage, she is mesmerising, brilliantly clever and entertaining and I loved the real life footage at the end of the movie which captured Winter in her real surroundings. It showed the real life children that had prosthetics visiting Winter to be inspired by her and get the chance to swim with her. I have to say this brought a tear to my eye. It was beautiful.

The Verdiict:

We enjoyed this film very much. It was simple, lovely and had all the necessary components that make a great family film. There were moments of adventure, joy, tension, happiness, love… it almost made you believe that there was no wickedness in the world and I left the cinema with a warm fuzzy feeling ๐Ÿ™‚
