New Years Resolutions and How to Stick to Them

how to stick to new years resolutions
First of all, Happy New Year!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas and celebrated the new year in which ever way which suits you at this moment in time!

Mine was spent indoors with a packet of biscuits and a cup of tea!

It’s a far cry from years gone by! New Years Eve used to be THE biggest night out for me and my mates when we were younger! Always searching for the best parties and club nights to go to. Everyone you knew would be out and it was would be bloody amazing! Some of my best times out have been on NYE!

I don’t think I’ve been out now for over 12 years on NYE but you know what? That’s just the way I like it! Simply being with my family, all warm and cosy watching the telly is good enough for me these days! This year, like previous years, I was at my Dad’s with my three youngest, my brother, his kids and just chilled.

And so…. 2018 begins. Have you made any new years resolutions? I actually CANNOT believe how fast the past year has flown. I’m sure we say that every year but 2017 seemed particularly fast!

My new years resolutions are pretty much the same as they always are. I wrote posts back in 2014 and 2016 on this and re-reading them they’re identical to what I’m thinking this time too… haha the usual suspects…. eating healthier, getting fit and generally being a bit more pro active with my ambitions! I suppose I made a good start with the getting fit this year… I joined a gym and did manage to go regularly up until the summer holidays where it all went a bit Pete Tong! I’m definitely eating better too but there’s much room for improvement there.

This year I have some big plans for a new little business I’m going to start up! More on that in a future post though!

Whether you’ve made specific resolutions/goals, the start of a new year is always the perfect time for reflection and to look forward. Most people have at least SOME things they’d like to achieve in the coming year. But how can we make sure we achieve our goals instead of letting them slip by the wayside?

Here’s a little list I’ve put together to help…..

1) They must be realistic

Even is the goal is big, be sure to break it down into smaller, more achievable stepping stones. That way, when you hit one, it will spur you on to the next and so on.

2)  Write out a plan

Writing your ‘stepping stones’ down on paper in a diary can give you the push you need. Again, don’t be unrealistic, give yourself time to get there. Not giving yourself enough time will only end in failure, which will knock your confidence and could result in you giving up.

3) Tell someone, or all your friends

Sometimes the only way to motivate ourselves is to make ourselves accountable. If you’ve told people what you want to achieve, it will make you more determined as you don’t want to look like you haven’t at least tried when they ask!

4) Make them short

Instead of making long term goals, make them short term instead. Kind of like Dry January. Giving up alcohol for a month sounds a lot more doable than giving up for a year!

5) Plan to keep your environment goal friendly

It’s no good planning to eat healthily if you’re still buying the same old tempting sweet treats to keep in the cupboards! Plan your meals for each day and don’t buy any extras! Or keep your running shoes by the door so you see them all the time if you plan to start running!

6) Focus on adding something more rather than taking away

Making resolutions where you add something to your life like joining a group/class or seeing certain people more is far easier than giving up things you enjoy, like alcohol or sugar!

7) Reward yourself

Allowing yourself a little treat after a certain amount of time is a good incentive. It could be buying yourself something new or doing something you love. Not allowing yourself to do these things until AFTER you have reached one of your milestones is a fantastic way to keep motivated!

Believe in yourself

You can do it! Keep positive and believe you can achieve your goals. Rome wasn’t built in a day and certain resolutions like big lifestyle changes are incredibly difficult to maintain. Don’t give yourself a hard time if you fall off the track, get back on and try again!

Good luck!

My New Year Goals 2016

First of all, Happy New Year! Hope you had a great NYE whatever you were doing!

Happy New Year 2016

I haven’t made any New Years Resolutions as such but this is a great time to take stock and think about things I’d like to achieve and do in the coming year.

I think the New Year brings the feeling that there’s a fresh, clean slate to be written on. A renewed positivity that we can achieve our goals and brand new hopes and dreams fill the air!

So, although not goals I have to achieve…. here are some of things I’d like to implement in 2016..

1. Eating Healthy

This is something I’ve tried to introduce seriously into my life a few times unsuccessfully, so I really want to crack it this year. Not just myself but my whole family. It means I need to find a whole new way of cooking, using new ingredients and cutting out the bad stuff! Of course I’m not going to be anal about this, as I think that would be unrealistic but there will definitely be some changes, especially where my own diet is concerned. Drinking more water and attempting some serious juicing are also included in this one!

2. Get Fit

Like above, I keep trying this but give up. I know it’s only going to get worse from now on… my body that is… ha, so I do really need to put more effort in! I want to investigate all things anti-ageing too…. I’m not getting any younger you know!

3. De-Clutter

Again, I had good intentions last year but got lazy. My house needs a mammoth clear out and I intend to be ruthless. I want to try and make a few quid with most of our (still in great condition) cast offs so ebay and carboot sales here I come!

4. Stop procrastinating

Seriously need to sort this out. Big time!

5. Visit more places

I’m far from an outdoorsey person but I do think the kids get an awful lot of out of being outside and going somewhere new. I’d like to visit places with them that I haven’t been to before, starting with local areas but hopefully some further afield. Considering our Country is such a small one, I haven’t seen that much of it at all!

Work wise I’m happy with the way things are right now. I enjoy my little part time job a couple of days a week… I may take on more hours but no immediate plans for that. I would like to blog more, but again we’ll have to see how I’m fixed time wise…. family time has to come first 🙂

That’s probably about it really. I believe that’s enough to be getting on with for now anyway!

New Year Plans

2014 New Year - Bits of Truth... all quotes

It’s that time of year when we all like to make new years resolutions. I made a few last year and the only one I really followed through on was to start my blog, which is great but the others fell by the wayside. They were mostly made up of the usual suspects like eating healthier, work out etc so not really a surprise that I didn’t stick to them but I had been planning to get my small business idea off the ground which I had worked on the year before, but it didn’t happen. It ran into a few difficulties, things changed and I didn’t feel ready to take the plunge. So that’s a bit of a disappointment looking back but I had the twins at home and I believe I was trying to do too much and not giving anything 100%.

This year I want to achieve a lot.

I’m not making resolutions as such, just plans.

I want to be more proactive with my new year plans and stop letting things get in the way.

As all of my kids are not back to school until tomorrow, my new year will start from then, it’s easier!! But wait… hmmm, this isn’t being proactive, more like procrastinating… Nooooo I do NOT want to procrastinate this year – not allowed!

So let’s get on with it then…. here are my plans for 2014

House Redecoration/Renovation

We are in the middle of a huge house extension which is moving slowly as we are doing a lot of the work ourselves (well the OH is, he has his own business in this area, he is the best person for the job!) so we need to push on with that. It’s all very exciting.

Also we haven’t done much cosmetic work inside our home since we bought it because of said building work but this is driving me insane. It took forever to get our building plans passed and now the job will take some time so I feel as though we are not enjoying our home at the moment. I plan to get to grips with this over the coming months. I’m going to cheaply revamp and organise some of the rooms, especially the bedrooms, to make them a little nicer than they are now.

I want to share some of my efforts here and hopefully bring you some decoration and DIY tips!

Be Organised

This is a biggie for me. I’m hopelessly unorganised and laid back which drives me mad. Being laid back has it’s benifits I guess but being a busy mum of four with so much to do each day and not getting on top of things, I definitely need some organisation in my life.

I don’t like lists yet I think lists might be the answer, or a kick up the backside – one of the two!!!! If anyone has any useful little hints or tips which could help, I would be eternally grateful 🙂

Blog More

It’s funny because I’ve read a number of posts recently where bloggers have said they want to blog LESS. They feel as though they spend far too much time blogging and want to devote more time to their family. I’m sitting on the opposite side of the fence where this is concerned. I want to blog MORE!

My little blog is only 8 months old and because I’ve had other things to do AND because I’ve had my twins at home, I’ve been reluctant to spend hours and hours writing blog posts. It’s simply not possible and I won’t put anything before spending time with my kids.

I have blogged sporadically, especially in the early days when my poor blog was lucky to see one post a week. I haven’t bought into the whole blog ranking system as yet and I definitely don’t have a clue about that so I will look into that this year, not that I’m particular bothered but I feel as though I at least should KNOW how it all works!

I’ve also just blogged about whatever comes into my head at the time which is fine, I’m still going to do that but I’d like to experiment this year and try some new things, I have a few ideas up my sleeve.

So devoting a bit (not loads) more time to my blog is what I want to achieve, I’d really love a new design too!

Eat Healthier and Get Fit

Ok so this one has come up again but because I’m not getting any younger this is something I feel strongly about this year. I enjoyed a break at a health spa just before Christmas and that has really whet my appetite so to speak.

I talked a little more in depth about my plans for a ‘new me’ before but firstly I plan to cook more healthy meals. I do cook a fair bit at the moment from scratch anyway but I’d like to introduce some super healthy foods to our diets. I need to look into this but I’ve already started with fruit and muesli for breakfast instead of tea and toast! A friend of mine is heavily into nutrition and knows exactly which type of food has what type of impact and health benefits for the body so she is going to help me out with this.

I would like to join a gym but I’m going to try a little workout routine at home first and see how that goes. I’m hoping to do the 30 day squat and crunch challenge too, maybe start that tomorrow.

Again I’ll share all of this with you in the future – I may need motivation!!!

We didn’t have a summer holiday last year due to the extension starting on our home so this year we are desperate!! We have been lucky enough to be chosen as Butlins Ambassadors for this year and I can’t wait for that break but we would really love a summer holiday somewhere abroad. We’ll have to wait and see.

They’re the main ones I suppose for this year but I have a few other things I need to do too. My Teen has started his two year GCSE course, an important time for him, he will need lots of support with this which I plan to give. It won’t be easy as like most boys his age, all he really wants to do is see friends and have fun so it’s going to be a challenge getting him to knuckle down.

I want to spend more time with the OH this year, just the two of us. We have become rather boring to say the least but not really our fault, our twins have been demanding and we have devoted ourselves to our little family. We need to do more as a couple, get out a bit more….Teen can attend to his babysitting duties – I’m sure he’ll love that hehe!

So that’s it. All good intentions. Time will tell if we succeed.

Happy New Year to you all!
